There are few things better than a holiday that revolves around drinking beer, wine & spirits. When that holiday also involves a culture’s savory, stewed and roasted traditional cuisine that shows itself in the month of March, we know it’s St. Patrick’s Day! When finding the perfect wine to pair with your Irish-inspired dishes there are guidelines to help accentuate and enhance your dishes and your St. Patty’s celebration. Here are a couple we came up with, let us know what your pairings were and how they turned out!
Corned beef & cabbage-This savory, traditional dish of beef cured with “corns” of salt and boiled cabbage is rich in flavor but is not as heavy as most would think. It goes perfectly with a dry style Riesling, which balances nicely the salty and sour flavors of this dish with a slightly sweet note of stone fruit and honeycomb.

Irish stew-Tender, slow cooked lamb, root vegetables like carrots, onions and potatoes, and savory herbs tie together well with a lighter style, fruit driven Pinot Noir with notes of spice. The stew beautifully highlights the subtleties of earth in the wine, while the fruit in the Pinot brightens and completes the pairing.

Sheppard’s Pie-This delicious hearty dish consisting primarily of cooked beef and potatoes needs a wine that can stand up to the weight, while highlighting the flavors of fresh rosemary, nutmeg, root vegetables and garlic. We suggest a cool-climate Syrah that shows notes of spice and dark fruit that will not only stand up to the pie, but will play off the flavors well.

Irish soda bread-Dense soda bread is a staple in Irish cuisine and is primarily noted for it’s light yeasty flavors and adornments of dried raisins or currants and caraway seeds. Light, fruity whites with bright acidity are a good pairing for this bread. They balance well with the buttermilk in the bread and sparkling wines can also work well with the yeasty notes.

Bread pudding-Rich, sweet and heavy, bread pudding is a classic. The key to pairing with this dessert relys on what topping/sauce you use on your pudding. If you choose a light cream, Crème Anglaise or whipped cream-think of a fruity, citrus driven dessert wine. If you go towards a spiced, dark rum sauce-think of a wine that will complement and also stand up to the weight of that sauce, like a port wine.
