Guest Blog from President & Head Winemaker, Eric Hickey: Chardonnay

Chardonnay, like most people I know, loves life on the coast. While it may be more particular about the actual soil type it grows in, I think we all have a lot in common with the world’s favorite white wine. Here at Laetitia, our style is truly reflective of the original purpose of the vineyards – to produce premium grapes for sparkling wine production. Our ocean-moderated climate, paired with our rocky volcanic and limestone soils are perfect for growing high acid, tight, citrusy and mineral driven Chardonnay – which is perfect for bubbles, and in turn, expressive yet refined still wine. The same flavors present in our sparkling wines come through in their still wine counterparts. Our style has never been the “big California, fat, tropical, butter ball” Chardonnay. Our vineyard can’t do it, and we don’t want it to. Our Chardonnay is a wine that has a kiss of oak and has gone through malolactic fermentation for the most part, which is really just to soften the naturally high acidity and crispness.

If you haven’t had our Chardonnay before, or if you’re already a fan, we welcome you to join us this weekend as we celebrate all things Chardonnay at The Chardonnay Symposium at Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa. My brother Dustin, who works in our cellar, will be pouring with our Viticulturist, Dave Terry at the Grand Tasting on Saturday, May 17th from 1-4PM. These boys know their Chard and will be pouring our Estate Chardonnay, Reserve du Domaine Chardonnay and Brut de Blancs sparkling wine, made entirely of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Also, be sure to check your goodie bag at check-in for a complimentary tasting ticket to visit us at the winery on Sunday, May 18th to taste the rest of our line up. Here’s to you Chardonnay!
